Samuel Wuersten receives royal honours02 May 2011
On Friday 29 April, Samuel Wuersten, Artistic Director of Holland Dance and Member of the Executive Board of Codarts Rotterdam, University for the Arts, received a knighthood in the order of Orange-Nassau Wuersten was honoured with this knighthood for his exceptional achievements in promoting the development of Dutch dance at home and abroad. The organisations of Holland Dance and Codarts Rotterdam are pleased that so many colleagues in the field have contributed their efforts to make this distinction possible.
Swiss born Samuel Wuersten (Gstaad, 1961) is well known in his home country for his achievements in dance in spite of the fact that he moved to the Netherlands 26 years ago and currently holds the Dutch nationality. From 1998 until 2010 he was the Artistic Co-director of the Steps festival, from 1997 until 2009 he was a member of the Prix de Lausanne’s artistic committee and the competition’s official teacher for contemporary dance. He has taught in Switzerland at the Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve and has also choreographed for Cathy Sharp’s dance company in Basle. In addition, Samuel Wuersten has been a regular guest lecturer at the University in Bern. Samuel Wuersten has been recently appointed to develop a new bachelor dance program in Switzerland on behalf of the ZHdK, Zuercher Hochschule der Kuenste and Codarts Rotterdam, University for the Arts.
Since 1994, Samuel Wuersten has been the artistic director of Holland Dance, the organisation behind the biennial festival and according to critics one of the most important dance festivals in the world. Under Wuersten’s direction, Holland Dance has grown into key presentation platform for dance. Wuersten continuously contributes to a varied dance landscape in which emerging talents and established names can excel and reach new heights. Because of his artistic, visionary and entrepreneurial qualities, Wuersten has succeeded in bringing Holland Dance to its current high level of recognition: stimulating for dance professionals, challenging and inspiring for audiences. The world’s greatest dancers and choreographers came to The Hague under Wuersten’s direction.
Holland Dance is constantly on the move and stages various dance events for a broad audience all year round. In addition to a stage for presentation, Holland Dance is also producer, coproducer, and instigator of dance projects. The promotion of the dance, with special attention for amateurs and education is a guiding principal in all of Holland Dance’s activities.
Since 2000, Samuel Wuersten has been the Artistic Director of the Rotterdam Dance Academy at Codarts Rotterdam, University for the Arts. In 2009 he joined the Executive Board of this leading educational institution for dancers, musicians and circus artists. During his artistic directorship he positioned the Rotterdam Dance Academy as one of the best programs for aspiring dancers, dance teachers and choreographers. As member of the Executive Board he is now responsible for the artistic vision behind all Codarts programs.
