High Energy Dance from Israel!
Rooster by Barak Marshall
SUZANNE DELLAL CENTRE/ISRAELI OPERA
“I am getting my dancers to move ethnic.” Barak Marshall
A co-production of the Suzanne Dellal Centre and the Israeli Opera, Rooster is a work by American-Israeli choreographer Barak Marshall. Based on the short story Bontscha the Silent by Yiddish language writer I.L. Peretz, this unique production combines high-energy dance with theatre, opera and plenty of humour. Regarded as one of the greatest choreographic talents in Israel, Marshall, who is self-taught, is known for his powerful dance style. In 1999, he was appointed by Ohad Naharin as the Batsheva Dance Company’s first-ever house choreographer where he created for two years. When he first appeared at the Holland Dance Festival in 1999, he remarked, “In Israel, dance is aggressive, peppery and emotional. Just like Israelis.”
