Symbiosis of dance and song
She calls 'Arenal' the most beautiful artistic present she ever received, and he in turn feels honoured that she wants to provide the live accompaniment to the choreographic work. This is an extremely special collaboration between Nacho Duato and Maria del Mar Bonet, who are both renowned figures in the art world. He is known as a dancer and choreographer with Nederlands Dans Theater and later as the artistic director of his own Compañía Nacional de Danza. And she is known as a popular Catalan singer of Spanish Folk.
'Arenal' is being revived especially for the occasion of NDT's anniversary, and the two figureheads are getting together once again. The production - a symbiosis between music and dance - shows the contrasts of Mediterranean life. On the one hand, it shows exuberant cheerfulness, and on the other it shows struggles with daily life.
Besides 'Arenal', Compañía Nacional de Danza is also presenting another work with social undertones: the more serious 'Herrumbre', which means 'rust'. 'Herrumbre' reflects on society and the ways in which images can poison us. The wonderful dancers portray people as rusting iron - weakened and polluting.
