The imaginary abstraction of Inger
It is no wonder that the Cullberg Ballet is a guest at the Holland Dance Festival, when the focus is on the anniversary of Nederlands Dans Theater. The two companies go way back, through the links with Mats Ek and Johan Inger.
When Inger joined Nederlands Dans Theater I as a dancer in 1990, Kylián soon recognised his talent as a choreographer. Five years later, Inger made his choreographic debut at the Holland Dance Festival with Mellantid; a production that proved to be an award-winning success. It was followed by a constant stream of other intriguing creations. This year, Inger - who until recently was artistic director of the Cullberg Ballet - will be 'returning home' to Nederlands Dans Theater, where he will take up the position of resident choreographer.
It is remarkable that his idiom has developed even further after all these years. Whereas Inger was previously known for his narrative and humorous ballets, he now works without the trappings and with an abstract approach. This is shown in Position of Elsewhere. The dancers look natural and the atmosphere is transparent and clear, which is partly due to the productive collaboration between Inger and his scenographer Jens Sethman. In their design, the two artists go in search of purity in an impressive set, transforming Position of Elsewhere into a powerful composition of movement, scenery and lighting.
