The absurd world of Hoche
A colourful and lively stage, on which an explosion appears to have taken place, is the setting for Pan! - an ode to bric-à-brac, junk and objects of little value. Lionel Hoche creates an atmosphere that cannot be placed; full of curiosities, absurd creatures and sounds. It is mechanical, absurd dance, filled with humour, like a parody of our Western consumer society.
In 1983, Hoche joined Nederlands Dans Theater, where he danced for six years under the leadership of Jirí Kylián. He also worked with such great names as William Forsythe and Jose Limòn. In 1988, he created his first work for Nederlands Dans Theater II, entitled U should Have Left the Light on. Now, twenty years later, he has over fifty choreographic works to his name, most of which have been performed by his Paris-based company.
Besides the dance world, Hoche has explored the world of visual art, and has also been working as a scenographer since 1992. For Pan!, Hoche was inspired by the vision of the Hopi Indians, who see the world as a whole, where everything that surrounds us has a use and deserves a place. It is a cosmic setting, in which questions about the world present themselves - a very special ode to Nederlands Dans Theater.
