Exciting encounters

For WisselWerk, dance professionals and top amateur dancers from the Netherlands are challenged to work together. This year, there are three choreographers with - of course - special ties with Nederlands Dans Theater. Before becoming choreographers, Amos Ben-Tal and Joeri Dubbe had careers as dancers with the company and Maurice Causey has been ballet master there since 2004 and choreographed his first piece with NDT in 2008. The festival has linked them up with top amateurs of modern dance and modern/urban dance and the amateur dance group STUdance from Utrecht. The dance combinations cross borders both figuratively and literally. Maurice Causey: "WisselWerk is a platform to exchange ideas and to further develop one's appreciation of culture. The process results in a performance that would otherwise perhaps never have been experienced". "The carte blanche instincts of amateur dancers, along with their passion for dance and willingness to learn, make them ideal partners for my kind of movement study", says Amos Ben-Tal. Joeri Dubbe: "I always see dance as an interaction. (...) Though I teach the steps, I also learn from the dancers. This is especially so now that I'm working with urban dancers, who bring with them a whole new area of knowledge for me. I have worked with someone from the breakdance scene before and the challenge really enriches me".

Alongside the works by these three choreographers, the amateur group Danzo from Deventer will be presenting repertoire from Nederlands Dans Theater.

Jérôme Meyer
Jérôme Meyer (Switserland) is an independent choreographer based in the Netherlands and combines dance, music and the management of his own dance company. Together with his wife Isabelle Chaffaud (France) he runs the MC Dance Company and produced successful choreographies such as Corps à Corps, Talking Body and Singing Voice and Kamerdans. The works of MC Dance Company were shown in many theaters in the Netherlands as in theaters in Germany, France, South Africa, the USA and Switserland. During this year’s Holland Dance Festival, Jérôme will be the teacher of the NDT repertoire “Whereabout Unknown” by Jiří Kilián and “Walking Mad” by Johan Inger, which he will teach to Danzo, an amateur dance company in Deventer, the Netherlands.

In 1981 Jérôme started his career at the Conservatory of Genève and studied classic, modern, jazz an steps dance next to the violin. He graduated in Dance at the University for Music and Performing arts in Munich and for his MBA in The Hague. He also graduated for his masters in dance/choreography at Codarts University. During his endeavors in education, Jérôme danced with different well-known companies as the Scapino Ballet, the Grand theatre de Genève, the Batsheva Dance Company of Ohad Naharin in Israel and became a solist at the Nederlands Dans Theater I lead by Jiri Kylian. As a dancer Jérôme is critically acclaimed and was finalist of the Hannover International Choreographer competition. Next to his dancing and creating own works Jérôme also teaches various dance workshops.
