A grip on life

In Orpheus Reloaded, Hades is the supreme caretaker of the underworld and the ultimate artist. For Hades, the kingdom of the dead is his allotted dominion and sphere of activity; his own place, where he rules, dreams and creates. He represents the most intangible part of our existence: death. But Hades also tries to get a grip on life. He is driven by music, his language is speech and his creations are dance. As the god of the underworld, he has to share his beloved Persephone with the world above. In his story of caprice, detachment and infinite desire, the story of Orpheus and Eurydice unfolds.

In Orpheus Reloaded, choreographer Tessa Cooke (who worked with Nederlands Dans Theater for ten years and is now an independent theatre maker) and theatre director Christiaan Mooij investigate the unbearable craving for love that leads to both creativity and obsession. Using film, language, dance and music, they tell the story of Hades (who musingly tells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice), Persephone and Eurydice (present as visions; virtual dancers captured on film) and Orpheus (who is aging and mourning the loss of Eurydice).
