Compañía Nacional de Danza
Alas (Wings)
He was born in Valencia. His fans – and there are many – call him ‘the handsomest man in Spain’. He received his dance training in London, Brussels and New York. In 1981, Jiří Kylián brought him to the Nederlands Dans Theater. Here he gained renown; first for his distinctive presence as a dancer, a favourite with audiences, and later as (resident) choreographer. He has been artistic director of the Compañía Nacional de Danza since 1990. This Madrid-based company developed into a veritable super-group under his inspired leadership. His choreographies have found their way to the repertoires of numerous companies throughout the world. The last appearance given by Duato and his Compañía in The Hague was almost ten years ago. The Holland Dance Festival is very pleased and proud that they will grace our program again in 2007. The production Alas (Wings) also offers the festival audience the chance to see the charismatic dancer Nacho Duato once again in full flight. Alas, that premiered in 2006, was a collaboration between Duato and Tomaž Pandur. The Slovenian theatre director selected fragments from the script of the film Der Himmel über Berlin (Wim Wenders / Peter Handke) for this production.
