The Dutch National Ballet
Adagio Hammerklavier, Black Cake, Dreaming about you, Metaforen
This year, Hans van Manen celebrates his 75th birthday. As a tribute to its world famous resident choreographer, The Dutch National Ballet presents a great festival in Amsterdam, The company will also tour with a selection of ballets from the festival program, with live music by the Holland Symfonia. ‘Van Manen is our great master’, Ted Brandsen, artistic director of the Dutch National Ballet. ‘His work has not only been a great influence on the development of the dance in our country, but in the whole of Europe’. The oeuvre of Hans van Manen includes almost 120 choreographies. A selection of four pieces has been made for this program: Adagio Hammerklavier, Black Cake, Dreaming about you, and Metaforen. In the classic Adagio Hammerklavier (1973) the choreographer, inspired by the adagio, examines the extremes of slow movements. Black Cake (1989) is, according to the maker himself, ‘a light, black desert, perfumed with a layer of sarcasm and drenched in champagne’. Dreaming about you, made for the occasion of the Erasmus Festival 2006, is a playful and surprising pas de deux. Over the years, the Holland Dance Festival presented numerous works by Van Manen, such as a wonderful youth performance by Introdans with an appearance by the master himself (1999).
