Alonzo King Lines Ballet

Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet
25th Anniversary Program

He is a celebrity in his own country and elsewhere in the world, and his work is widely renowned. In the Netherlands however, he is known by but a very few people: Alonzo King. William Forsythe – the grand master of dance – cites him as one of the few real greats of contemporary ballet: ‘His intimacy with ballet’s multiple histories has made his choreography rich with the complex refractions that demonstrate a full command of the art’s intricacies.’ King is choreographer and artistic director of his own company, Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. The company makes its first appearance in this country at the eleventh edition of the Holland Dance Festival with a special anniversary program. Work by King, rightly called innovatively classical, is part of the repertoire of many renowned dance companies such as the former Frankfurt Ballett and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Alonzo King often works with well-known artists from other disciplines. At the Holland Dance Festival, Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet will perform two brand-new choreographies by King in its 25th Anniversary Program. For one piece, King collaborated with Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, for the other he chose music from the Baroque period.
