Shusaku Takeuchi
The Butterfly Project

In October 2005 the choreographer, philosopher, designer and visual artist Shusaku Takeuchi performed an impressive ceremonial solo – the so-called Butterfly Dance – in the building of the United Nations in New York. After this event, it became clear to him that this dance had the potential to grow into a community-arts project that could bring the message of peace to all corners of the world. On invitation, Takeuchi performed his Butterfly Dance a second time in the UN building in Geneva. This was followed by a number of public appearances elsewhere. Now the spectacular Butterfly Project, directed by Takeuchi will have its world-premiere at the eleventh edition of the Holland Dance Festival. Takeuchi is the creator of a number of eminent theatre pieces, and has primarily manifested himself as a much talked-about location artist. The Butterfly Project will be a recurring element in this year’s Holland Dance Festival. The absolute climax will take place during the performance in the Atrium of the City Hall of The Hague. Participating in this exceptional production are no less than 100 performers: professional dancers, musicians and amateur dancers (40 mothers and 40 daughters).
